By Dada Babajide Razak

The Federal University Lokoja, celebrated 2024 international mother language day with great funfare and pageantry on Wednesday, 21st February, 2024.

International Mother Language day is a day set aside by United Nation to celebrate multi Lingual languages and cultural diversity across the globe .

At it's Felele campus, the university was a buzz with activities as the department of Linguistics and African Languages led the celebrations with the theme : *Multilingual Education is a pillar of intergenerational learning"*

The acting HOD for the department Dr. Tosin Olagunju implored the students to promote and sustain their mother language and use it often with pride.

In the same vein, the awardee of a Grant (hosted by the institution) funded by Endangered Languages Documentation Programme (ELDP), based in Germany,

to document the Ososo language and Ovbiko Maiden Initiation Rite, Dr. Agnes Legbeti said the decreasing use of Mother Language was a cause for concern because the loss of our mother language inevitably translates to identity and culture loss. She and her colleagues choose the occasion to call for renewed efforts at promoting the use of our mother tongue widely especially at homes, especially as more and more youths have failed to realized the importance of their mother tongue and cultural heritage. If our generation fails to help the upcoming generation learn and appreciate our indigenous languages, nobody would do it for us. She has promised to set up an NGO to further continue her advocacy to encourage everyone to uphold in any way possible, their history and cultural heritage .

Several Kogi cultural heritage, food, dance and multilingual performances in indigenous languages were displayed by hundreds of enthusiastic students to showcase the rich culture of Kogi state, of Nigeria and Africa in general .
