Wale Adelana Hails Supreme Court Judgement on Local Government Financial Autonomy

By Dada Babajide Razak

APC Chieftain Hon. Wale Adelana has applauded the Supreme Court verdict on local Government financial autonomy in Nigeria.

Speaking on Radio Nigeria Network News on July 11, 2024, he said the verdict is a victory for the people and would impact on the growth of Nigeria's democracy.

He further said the direct allocation to the LGs would enable them to carry out infrastructural development projects in their locality unlike in the recent past when some of them complained of paucity of funds due to the mismanagement associated with the LG funds under the present Joint Account Committee JAC system through which disbursement is done by the various state governments. He mentioned it specifically, that many states have been denying the LGs, the mandatory 10% of revenue from the state. However, he called on he National Assembly to ensure the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) monitors this fund to ensure it's not mismanaged.

He also spoke on the consequences of this judgment on security in the states and emphasized that with adequate funding the clamor for state police can now be adequately executed at the grassroots in conjunction with the various state governments. He said that this would indirectly affect our security nomenclature positively across Nigeria.

Finally, he re-emphasizes in his statements that adequate Monitoring mechanisms should be put in place by the Federal Government to ensure the funds are judiciously managed for the benefit of the people and their communities.

Hon.Wale Adelana is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and has served in various capacities of the party. He is currently the National Organising Secretary of Tinubu Support Organisation TSO led by Alh Aminu Suleiman.
