The commitment of the Lagos State Government to youth empowerment and grassroots sports development received another major boost as hundreds of professional and aspiring skaters converged on the National Stadium, Surulere, for the third edition of Skate Lagos 3.0, a vibrant competition that rewarded outstanding talents with over ₦2 million in cash prizes and 25 pairs of professional skating boots.

Held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, the annual event, themed "Rolling Into The Future," attracted participants from across Lagos State and other parts of the country, showcasing the growing popularity and potential of roller skating as a viable sporting career.

The programme was organized by the Lagos State Government through the Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Grassroots Sports Development, Mr. Adebanji Atewogboye (SKIBANJ), in alignment with Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu's vision of expanding opportunities for young people through sports and talent development.

A major highlight of this year's edition was the donation of 25 pairs of professional skate boots by Just Used Tech, a Lagos-based sports technology company, to exceptional grassroots skaters identified during the competition. The gesture was widely applauded as a significant investment in nurturing the next generation of skating champions.

Speaking at the event, Atewogboye emphasized that Skate Lagos was created to transform skating from a street pastime into a structured and sustainable profession.

"We started this initiative to discover talents, develop them and create opportunities that will empower young people to become future sports stars. Skating should be seen as a professional sport and not merely a recreational activity on the streets," he stated.

He further urged participants to embrace discipline and professionalism, advising them to avoid the dangerous practice of holding onto moving vehicles while skating.

According to him, skating presents numerous opportunities beyond competition, including careers as coaches, instructors, promoters and sports entrepreneurs.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Lagos State Roller Sports Association, Mr. Philips Olatubosun Oyede, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu and Atewogboye for sustaining the initiative over the past three years and continuously improving its impact.

He called on corporate organizations to support the growth of roller sports in the same manner football receives sponsorship and investment, while also appealing for skating to be formally incorporated into the Lagos State Sports Commission's programmes.

The competition featured multiple categories, including Slalom, 100m Junior Races, 200m Female Race, 500m Male Race and Free Jump events, with winners receiving cash rewards ranging from ₦25,000 to ₦250,000.

Beyond the major prize categories, several promising skaters also received special recognition awards of ₦20,000 each for their performances and commitment to the sport.

The success of Skate Lagos 3.0 further underscores the Lagos State Government's determination to harness sports as a tool for youth engagement, social inclusion and economic empowerment, while creating pathways for talented young athletes to achieve national and international recognition.

As the wheels continue to roll, Skate Lagos is steadily evolving into one of the state's most impactful grassroots sports platforms, proving that with the right support, passion on the streets can be transformed into excellence on the global stage.
