Emotions filled the atmosphere on Sunday, June 1, as friends, family members, football stakeholders, and sports enthusiasts gathered at St. Finbarr's College, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos, to celebrate the life and legacy of former Super Eagles midfield maestro, Henry Onyemanze Nwosu (MON).

The solemn but inspiring Night of Tribute brought together notable figures from Nigeria's sporting community, who paid glowing tributes to one of the nation's most respected football heroes. The event, anchored by renowned sports broadcaster Deji Omotoyinbo, reflected on Nwosu's remarkable contributions to Nigerian football and his enduring impact on generations of players and fans.

In his welcome address, Chairman of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, Rev. (Amb.) Samuel Ikpea, described the late football legend as a man of honour, integrity, and patriotism whose service to Nigeria through football remains unparalleled.

According to him, Nwosu's memorable performances in the green and white colours of the national team brought joy and pride to millions of Nigerians, while his humility and commitment endeared him to football lovers across the country.

Tributes continued to pour in from respected football stakeholders, including Chief Rafiu Ladipo, who praised Nwosu's patriotism and selfless service to the nation. Former Super Eagles stars Silvanus Okpala and Waheed Akanni, speaking on behalf of the Lagos Legends, shared touching memories of their association with the late midfield maestro, describing him as a dependable teammate, mentor and friend.

Chairman of the St. Finbarr's Old Students Association, Elder Patrick Doyle, hailed Nwosu as one of the institution's finest ambassadors whose achievements on the football field projected the school's name onto the global stage.

Also paying tribute was the Director-General of the National Institute for Sports, Comrade Philip Shaibu, who described Henry Nwosu as a passionate advocate of sports development and a dependable ally of former footballers.

Shaibu noted that the late football icon was always willing to support initiatives aimed at advancing sports and improving the welfare of retired athletes. He urged former footballers to unite and strengthen their association in order to better cater for the needs of players who had served the nation with distinction.

Former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu, who was among the dignitaries at the event, also joined other speakers in celebrating the life and legacy of the football icon, noting that his contributions to Nigerian football would remain a reference point for future generations.

Delivering the keynote message, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo offered prayers for the peaceful repose of Nwosu's soul and comfort for the bereaved family.

In a moving sermon, he reminded attendees of the certainty of death and encouraged everyone to make positive use of their God-given talents so that their legacies would continue to inspire others long after they are gone.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Lagos State Football Association Chairman, Alhaji Liameed Gafar, who noted that Nigerian football would greatly miss Nwosu's vision, humility, compassion and unwavering desire to contribute to the development of the game.

One of the emotional highlights of the evening was the screening of a ten-minute documentary chronicling the life and football journey of the late Super Eagles legend. The documentary featured heartfelt reflections from former teammates and colleagues who had recently participated in a valedictory match held in his honour.

Among those present were members of the Lagos Legends team, former Athletics Federation Chairman Dan Ngerem, sports administrators, journalists, football enthusiasts, and numerous distinguished guests from across the sporting community.

The Nigeria Football Supporters Club added colour and excitement to the occasion with musical performances and entertainment, creating a fitting celebration of a life dedicated to football and national service.

Monday Kanu, Coordinator of the Central Planning Committee, expressed profound appreciation to everyone who contributed to the successful hosting of the Nite of Tribute and other programmes organized in honour of their late colleague and friend, Henry Nwosu. He also offered prayers for the peaceful repose of Henry Nwosu and other departed colleagues, asking God to grant them eternal rest and everlasting peace.

Though Henry Nwosu has taken his final bow, his name remains permanently etched in the annals of Nigerian football history — remembered not only for his brilliance on the pitch but also for the character, leadership and patriotism he displayed throughout his life.
