 Nollywood Mourns as Veteran Actor Taiwo Hassan ‘Ogogo’ Dies at 66

Veteran Yoruba Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has reportedly died at the age of 66 following a prolonged battle with stage-four cancer.

The actor’s death was confirmed on Sunday, August 23, 2026, by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during an emotional Instagram Live session. The development came shortly after the family appealed publicly for urgent medical assistance as the actor’s condition reportedly became critical.

Ogogo’s daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, had previously revealed that their father was battling advanced cancer and required specialised medical care. Their disclosure generated widespread concern, prayers and support from fans, colleagues and well-wishers within and outside the entertainment industry.

The latest development also followed a false death report that circulated on social media on August 18. At the time, Lima Taiwo debunked the claim and appealed to the public to disregard unverified reports concerning her father’s health.

Five days later, the family confirmed the veteran actor’s passing.

Born Taiwo Hassan, Ogogo established himself as one of the most influential faces in Yoruba-language cinema, enjoying a career that spanned decades. His distinctive screen presence, commanding performances and versatility earned him a loyal following among generations of Nigerian movie audiences.

He also extended his acting career beyond traditional Yoruba productions, appearing in notable contemporary projects, including Aníkúlápó, which further exposed his talent to a wider Nigerian and international audience.

His passing is expected to leave a significant void in the Yoruba film community, with colleagues, filmmakers, fans and other members of the Nigerian entertainment industry mourning an actor whose contribution to Nollywood stretched across generations.

As tributes begin to emerge, Ogogo’s legacy remains firmly connected to the growth and popularity of Yoruba cinema in Nigeria.
