OBASEKI VS PARTY SUPREMACY
OBASEKI VS PARTY SUPREMACY
While I have taken time to follow the ongoing imbroglio towards the All progressives Congress gubenatorial primary election in Edo state , depending on where your interest lies in the whole scenario, some believes the party was unjust to have disqualified the Governor from seeking the party ticket for a second term while others have a different opinion that the party screening commitee and the appeal committee are justified in their decision.
The appeal committee which arrived at its decision on the facts that there was discrepancies in the certificates presented by Godwin Obaseki and his anti party activities arising from highheadnes in taking the party to court on issues which the party has given directives; which included an order to reconvened the state assembly to accomodate all the elected legislators by edo people to have their seat in the state assembly instead of his nine chosen legislators a call he ignored for three years and continued to issues inflammatory statements as a defactor of the state.
While the drama continues I think all politicians should realise that no matter their status the party on which they assumed power should be supreme in their activities and work with the party especially the National working commitee who is the apex decision making.
Moreover, the recent supreme court judgement has empowered each political parties to take issues of screening party aspirants educational qualifications with all seriousness than ever or risk losing their election victory to technicality and litigation in courts. Reference case is 2019 elections in Zamfara and Bayelsa state among others.
Politicians should also study their party constitution with absolute understanding before using such platform for their political career.
The party which pleaded with governor obaseki to give peace a chance by reconvening the state legislature and harmonised all interest in the state with setting up of reconciliation commitee felt on the deaf ear of Obaseki claiming no one can intervene or direct him on how to govern his state is the same party structure he now runs to seek their permission to partake in the primary election to make his second term in office a reality.
In all this aforementioned, issues of god-fatherism cannot be overlook or swept aside but when everything favours our politicians they ignore the existence of this monster but when it worked against them they cries out.
As the soap opera continues its certain that governor Obaseki has chewed more than he can bite under the All progressives Congress and it's not certain that president Muhammad Buhari can save his head because the president has always distance himself from party politics.
Would the next moves of Obaseki to seek his second term ticket from other party save him and makes his dream a reality or would he resort calmly to his faith like the former lagos state governor Akinwunmi Ambode who had issues with the party structures prior to 2019 election ? Win or lose new chapter is about to be written in Edo state soon.
